The Schio & Alto Vicentino open-air museum

The industriai archaeology, promoted by the Teachers' Centre for Dernocratic Initiative together with the Schio Administration office for Education and Culture, has followed the experience of the open-air museum developed in England and in other Europeon countries, and especially what has been dane in France regording conservation and exploitation of the historical cultural and environmental patrimony  by the creatian of Ihe ecomusée. The exhibitian fealures Ihe industriai monuments and remains of moterial culture widespread Ihroughout the area which includes Ihe lowns of Schio, Torrebelvicino, Valli del Pasubio, Sanlorso, Piovene Rocchette, Marano Vicentino, 

, S. Vito di Leguzzano, Malo, and extends towards Valdagno, Thiene, Isola Vicentina, Villaverla and Breganze. The open-air museum provides a series of structured itineraries mainly centred around Schio, devised by experts from Ihe Schio Teachers' Centre far Democratic Inilialive, with the inlenlion of giving visilors Ihe opportunity of firsthand exploration and study of induslrial civilisalion and the revolution il was generaled by, in terms of hislory, economy, society, tec6nology, science, environment, town planning, art elc. The Reception Centre and Induslrial Archaeology Educational Laboratory of Ihe museum are run by Ihe Schio C/DI, which is specialised in Ihe sludy of material culture and industriai palrimony The laboratory offers educalional and cultura I supporl lo schools and organised aduli groups. 

The open-air museum ilineraries are more or less centred on Schio and concem Wool Milis, Workers' Neighbourhoods, parlicularly Ihe one in Schio, the Jacquard Garden, Monuments, Canals, Sawmills, Com Milis, Forges, Hydroelectric Power Sialions, Silk Milis, Mining - at the Tretto Kaolin Piani ond Ihe Ilalcementi Cement Factory in Schio Ihe Saccardo Faclory, Alessandro Rossi's Villa, Park and Model Farm in Santorso, the Industriai Village, Ihe Summano Brewery and the Barattoni Pasla Factory in Piovene Rocchelle elc. These may involve one or more Ihemes and have been worked aut by the experls from Ihe Schio Teachers' Centre far Democratic Iniliative with Ihe inlenlion of giving visilors an idea of the variety of the ancienl prolo-induslrial and industriai settlemenls in the area, and in parlicular, allowing students and teachers lo lake pari in an active study of induslrial civilisation and Ihe revolulion il was generated by (in terms of history economy society, ari, archilectonics, technology science, geography, lown planning etc.) while immersed within a rich and exlraordinary patrimony of evidence of manual work. In conclusion, Ihese ilineraries represent ideas far field sludies and induslrial archaeologicallrips far 011 those who are inleresled in Ihe evenls connected with the work of man and ils physical, social and economic expression.
